Tribute to McLaren and the Sex Pistols
By: Steve Tipp

When you think about the music business there are impresario’s behind the scenes who are as big and important maybe more important than the artists themselves. That might be a bit of an exaggeration but to say Malcolm McLaren who died this week of cancer was a huge influence in the music business is not an overstatement. McLaren was incredibly influential in putting together the Sex Pistols a game changer of a band if ever there was one and he was a big factor in their publicity, press, dress, so many of the factors that made the Sex Pistols the huge influence they were on Punk Rock. Malcolm released an album in 1983 here in the US called Duck Rock that was a massively influential project as well in moving forward the burgeoning hip-hop, graffiti and rap scene. His song Buffalo Gals was played on radio stations like KROQ here in Los Angeles and embraced by the dance and hip hop communities as well. When you look at the video for Buffalo Gals you can see Malcolm shining a light on these new worlds of break dancing, graffiti art, scratching DJ music and rap vocal expression which would have impact for decades to come. RIP Malcolm and Livestrong!
