Whether it’s another sign of economic recovery or just old fashion business tactics, Gary Friedman, owner of Dungarees Denim, is opening a new store in the Calabasas Country Mart. Offering high end jeans for Men and Women, Friedman recently changed his line of clothing after ample research.

“You know, young guys aren’t buying t-shirts for 60 – 70 dollars,’ he states. He’s changed his inventory and his price point. Now offering new shirts from Alternative Apparel, these Europe made products are quality but not designer prices. Over the years, it’s his relationship with the studio that have keep his business afloat.

“It helps when the walk in traffic is really low and Melanie Griffith walks in,” he laughs. “And of course CBS Radford, Warner Brothers, Disney – if I didn’t have the support of the studios, it would be tough.”

But the New York born Friedman has high hopes. His vaulted ceilings and old wood furniture are just waiting on the inventory as they gear up for opening day.

What does Dungaree mean?

A true Fairy Godmother passes away at the age of 93 peacefully at her home. She has been a pillar in the Burbank community stemming from volunteer work that dates back to World War II. Most people associate Mary as the inspiration for Disney’s animated “Cinderella” Fairy Godmother, and wife of Ken O’Connor, Disney’s renowned artist…but she should also be remembered as a devoted volunteer. Her accomplishments were well spread throughout her life.

Among her contributions was the involvement as a school board member, her role in leadership for Burbank’s Tournament of Roses as well as being part of the Friends of Burbank Library and Historical Society. One of her dearest accomplishments was being a key player in the reopening of the Burbank Starlight Bowl in the early 1990’s. The Mary O’Conor Family Center carries on her life lessons in that they offer educational enrichment programs in addition to child care services. Her life was spent volunteering to help others which lives on through individuals who follow in her footsteps.
