“Spunky’s” Rescue Ranch/ Part I Cats
Mary Dee Rickards is the patron saint of cats and horses. Mary, a lifetime Malibu resident (with a few stints in northern California) is an attorney by education but her real passion is saving animals who are about to be euthanized.
Ironically, it is her legal occupation which led her to her life as Madame of the cat house at Spunky’s Rescue Ranch. While in court one day, Mary was taken out to see a mom and her litter of kittens living behind the courthouse; fearing for their safety she rescued them. The mom and two kittens were later adopted but Mary kept two of the Ragdolls, named Billy and Spunky, for herself. When Spunky passed away at only 4 years old, Mary’s search for a companion for Billy led to her current avocation of rescuing homeless, injured and sick pets. Mary fosters the cats until she can place them in good homes. What began with Ragdoll rescue and expanded to Maine Coons and Siamese soon developed into a United Nations of cats.
When my cat William passed on, I went up to Spunky’s Ranch to adopt a kitten. Mary had just returned from a life saving mission to a kill shelter in Cucamonga with boodles of kittens and some cats. I fell in love with a terrific little Maine Coon, now named Harry, who is happily ensconced in my home (despite the hissing of Minnie cat). Mary has cats of all breeds and ages available for adoption to loving homes. There are even British short-hair tabby cats that look just like the famous Cheshire cat.
Many of the cats have all their shots, have been spayed or neutered and microchipped. Most importantly they are in a great environment, happy, well cared for and ready for life in your home.
If you are currently looking for a cat take the scenic ride to Spunky’s where you should be able to find your perfect match. Mary also would love to have people just come up and visit to spend some time playing with the cats, as well as giving them some TLC
Believe me, adopting or volunteering to spend some time petting and playing with the kitties is even more rewarding for humans than it is for the felines! Spunky’s Rescue Ranch is registered with the IRS as a charity and donations are always welcome.
