Portion of Van Nuys, CA to become Part of Sherman Oaks, CA
By Gary Krieger
Great news for a part of the City of Van Nuys that will now become part of the City of Sherman Oaks. The name change should increase home values over both the short term and long term for those homeowners already in Sherman Oaks. Gary Krieger, an Estate Agent with Ewing & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty says his friends who lived on Stansbury just north of Burbank are thrilled to have been incorporated into the Sherman Oaks community. In an e-mail from them, Krieger says that they told him they participated in the City Council meetings and discussions in favor of changing the boundaries of Sherman Oaks to include the area bounded by the area between Hazeltine & Sepulveda, and between Burbank and Oxnard. They told Gary Krieger they felt that they were an active part of the governing process.
The Los Angeles City Council voted 10-2 to allow a portion of Van Nuys to become part of Sherman Oaks. Quoting various sources and practical politics, Councilman Tony Cardenas, who represents the area to the north of the community that sought the re-naming, spoke assertively against the making the change. “Many of the arguments made for this raised racial issues,” Cardenas said. “And even though we have a process for name changes, I don’t think we should be bound by that.” Those residents who supported the name change rejected the issues Councilman Cardenas raised and said the area involved currently has a wide variety of ethnic groups living there.
There are many lovely homes in the new area, some of which could easily be imagined in other estate areas of Sherman Oaks, like the Longridge Estates area, or Dixie Canyon estate area, Stansbury estates, and many more.

Dear Mr. Krieger:
Thank you for your positive take on the Van Nuys neighborhood name change issue (your July 17, 2009 article). Our neighborhood coalition, Part of Sherman Oaks, believes this name change will have a very positive impact, both in attracting new business to the area as well as new families.
Tomorrow Part of Sherman Oaks is hosting its victory celebration at the Sherman Oaks Park. The press release follows, and we welcome you to drop in. City Controller Wendy Greuel will speak, and other Council reps will attend.

Press Release:
New Sherman Oaks Neighborhood to Celebrate Name Change
The Van Nuys neighborhood which successfully changed its name and became annexed to Sherman Oaks after a nearly year-long, heated controversy, will hold a victory picnic and general community celebration this Saturday, September 12, 2009, at the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks park. Festivities run from 4 – 7 p.m. at the corner of Tyone and Huston.
City Controller and former Councilwoman Wendy Greuel will speak at 5 p.m. Representatives for City Council members Janice Hahn, Paul Koretz and Richard Alarcon will also attend.
Valley resident, Laurette Healey, who applied for the name change and spearheaded the Part of Sherman Oaks movement, said the group chose the Van Nuys – Sherman Oaks park as a way of including residents of all communities. “This is a celebration that embraces the spirit of civic activism and inclusiveness. We have discovered along the way that we are a community that cares about the lives of everyone in the Valley.” Healey says that Part of Sherman Oaks is poised to initiate community projects such as solar powered street lighting and beautification, and that the neighborhood plans to become active in the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, the local chamber, and Neighborhood Councils.
The celebration will feature a catered barbeque, raffle, music, face painting, games and a bouncer for children.
Part of Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood boundaried by Burbank Boulevard north to Oxnard, and Hazeltine to Sepulveda Boulevard. The neighborhood applied in October, 2008 to be annexed to Sherman Oaks, reasoning that it was once a part of that area, it is cut off from Van Nuys by an industrial zone, and that children in the neighborhood attend Sherman Oaks schools. While both the Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Councils opposed the name change, former City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel supported it as as one of her last acts in office. The name change was approved by the Los Angeles City Council on July 14, 2009.
Another disadvantage to van leasing is that it can be difficult to calculate the annual mileage and other charges. A leased van has a set number of miles that can be accumulated on it. If the number of miles exceeds this number, the charges can be quite costly. To avoid this, it is important to accurately calculate the mileage that one does in a year. Miscalculating this can lead to heavy charges that the individual or company leasing the van was not expecting. Other charges that may be included in a lease is that the individual will have to pay for any damages to the vehicle. Although this would probably be the case should the person own the van outright, there may be some minor damages that the individual would not bother in fixing if the van were their own property?
