Walk into your backyard and look west.  You’ll probably observe a set of substantial mountains and many miles between you and the sea.  But imagine your city millions of years ago.  No high rises or suburban sprawl, no pollution, no humans for that matter.  Just open land, verdant hills and an angry pacific, slapping the shores of southern California.  But, the shore was a little further east in those days.  Forget Malibu; no Point Dume, Zuma Beach or Santa Monica Mountains.  Instead, the shores were in your own backyard, full of sea life.  Anemones, mussels, fish, and of course, whales.

How do we know?  A 30 foot skeleton was recovered in Hidden Hills in 1950.  Check out the photo and next time you step on a bone in the valley, consider its origin.
