Goldens for adoption

Goldens for adoption

Share/Bookmark

If you’re looking for a quality Golden Retriever from a foster home that’s never been kenneled, visit SCGRR.

Their Goldens are temperament tested, socialized and vetted prior to adoption.  Their goal is to find loving, lifetime homes for all Southern California Goldens in need, regardless of condition or circumstance. They strive to build a refuge that serves as a halfway house where each of our beloved Goldens can rest and recuperate.

This organization is really special and I have many friends that have used this service to find their own pet. This is a great place to start when looking for a Golden.

Every Man Must Thank his Faults

Words from Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “As every man had ever a point of pride that was not injurious to him, so no man had ever a defect that was not somewhere made useful to him…Every man in his lifetime needs to thank his faults.”  Likewise, the faults of the market offer opportunities to those who pay attention.  And, we must thank those faults and pay attention to what they offer us.

Today on the radio I heard an economist say by 2012 we’ll be back to normal.  Recovery will have taken hold and the stock market will thrive.  Now, we all know that economists are notorious for digging themselves into holes and then explaining how they get out of the holes, but more and more economists are predicting recovery in the not-so-distant future.  That leaves opportunity for savvy people to buy real estate now, before the market heats up again.  And, those who do will likely reap the profits from those purchases.  2012?  2013?  2014?  We really don’t know.  But we do know that historically, in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana and Woodland Hills, for example, the markets have always rebounded and have always gone higher than the previous highs.  I hope this is helpful…

Daylight savings time change spring 2010

2010 Spring Forwarddali-clock

Modern DST was first proposed in 1895 by George Vernon Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist. Since it’s origin, it has been adopted in much of the world. However, adding daylight to afternoons benefits retailing, sports, and other activities that exploit sunlight after working hours but causes problems for farming, evening entertainment and other occupations tied to the sun.  Whether it’s a good thing for our economy is debatable, however, one thing is sure.  On March 14th at 2am, we will move the time one hour forward.

The Story of Chelsea King

Chelsea King

By: Serena Scott Thomas

We hear once again how vulnerable we all are to these evil predators.  My heart goes out to her family and friends and to all those who have lost a child in any way.  It is a fear that all parents live with from the day that our children are born, a nightmare that I believe I personally would not survive and I am grieving with you all.  I am also angry.  Furious that the justice system has failed to protect us, again.

John Albert Gardner, the perpetrator of this sickening crime, at the time of Chelsea’s disappearance, was already known as a sex offender and was being harbored by his parents.  He is also suspected in an attack on another young girl a few days earlier and the disappearance of Amber Dubois. It enrages me to discover that this could have been so easily prevented and to know that the systems in place that are meant to protect us are so flawed.  I urge every parent to inform themselves about sex offenders living in your neighborhoods.  It is a sad fact that they are there, but they are there nonetheless.

I myself am guilty of burying my head in the sand pile of disclosures given to me when I bought my house, which included the Megan’s Law Disclosures.  I am ashamed that it has taken the news of this appalling event to get me to pay close enough attention.  There really is no excuse but fear and denial (Two understandable but not very helpful mind frames).

So what can we do? How can we protect our families and our society from this real and pervasive danger? We can, by staying informed and informing our children, in an age appropriate way, of course.  I am attaching a link to the government run web page where you can find details, photos, addresses and convictions of all the sex offenders in your area.  It is a free service, available any time and there is no registration involved, you just type in your zip code.  Please take a few minutes to face this ugly truth in the hope that these tragedies can be prevented from now on.  I know it’s uncomfortable, but what’s a few moment discomfort compared to a horrible death of a child and a lifetime of  interminable grieving?  My heart goes out to the King and Dubois families.  I wish them solace and comfort and thank them for the courage and generosity of spirit that enables them to speak out and perhaps help prevent this from happening to your children or mine.  With regret, Serena.

Bob Marley “In Dub, Volume 1″

Tipp’s Tip: Bob Marley “In Dub, Volume 1″

By: Steve Tipp

When I was a teenager and we started hearing about Bob Marley and the Wailers around 1975-1976, we were hooked.  We were going to a hippy school and all the teachers were talking about them, they had played the Roxy and I think KMET broadcast the show, they were the talk of the town.  Marley is easily the best selling reggae artist of all time, his posthumous album “Exodus” has sold over 10 million copies in the US and 20 million internationally.  Time magazine in 1999 declared “Exodus” the Album of the Century.  While everything about his music is timeless; the melodies, vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, production, all of it is amazing. I can get a little worn out after 25-30 years.  So when I saw on my iTunes that Bob Marley “In Dub, Volume 1” was being released I was interested.  These versions are stripped down vocally and spaced out sonically and for folks who might be burnt out on the originals but still lovers of the music, they really freshen it up in a way that works for me.  Let me know what you think.

Save Gas Burn Fat

By: Kyle Gulock

Share/Bookmark

Who doesn’t want to save gas and burn fat in the process? A friend of mine, Vinnie Tortorich, has created a website where people can go to learn about how to save gas and burn fat in the process, www.savegasburnfat.com. Vinnie been a personal trainer for over 27 years in Los Angeles County, and has been an ultra cyclist since the early 90’s.

Savegasburnfat is a website that is dedicated to helping people lose weight, save money, and go green in the process. In 1983 Vinnie played football at Tulane and weighed 250 pounds, which is good size for a linebacker. After Vinnie’s football career was over, he ballooned up to 270 pounds. At this point, Vinnie had decided that enough was enough and health became Vinnie’s number one concern. Vinnie’s new diet consisted of him eating half of what he did before and ridding his bike everywhere. After this simple diet was put into place, Vinnie was able to drop his weight from 270 to 180 in around a year’s time.

Currently, Vinnie rides his bike an average of 13,000 miles a year and has even been recorded riding 17,000 miles one year. There aren’t any miracle drugs involved, but just pure hard work. For more information on Vinnie’s story, how to save gas and burn fat, click on the link below: www.savegasburnfat.com.

Selling Real Estate like Brenda Ueland

By: Gary Krieger

Selling or buying residential real estate is a collaborative project.  While the realtor is the professional and should provide valuable guidance to his clients, the clients provide the most important input into the process.  There’s a wonderful quote from Brenda Ueland, the writer, journalist and teacher who lived from 1891 to 1985.  She said, “Listening is a majestic and strange thing, a creative force.  When people really listen to each other in a quiet, fascinated attention, the creative fountain inside each of us begins to spring and cast up new thoughts and unexpected wisdom”.

As I listen to my clients, I focus on the issues at hand in order to hear them at a deeper level.  I always hope they do the same when I speak to them.  This synergy offers an opportunity to work as a team, collaborating to find the best solutions that work for my clients.   One of my clients had a constraint on purchasing a new home in a specific area.  By discussing similar areas in other parts of the hillside, by asking questions and by putting our heads together, we opened up several new, and previously not considered areas for them to look for a home.  We succeeded and they now have a home outside the original, and rigid, geographic boundaries.

My clients tend to be in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana and Woodland Hills.  While I go wherever they take me in Los Angeles, this is my primary area of focus.  If you’re looking for a professional to help you sell your home, and want someone who will partner with you, call me.  And, if your looking to purchase a home, I’d be honored to help you.

Listen Deeply and Work Smoothly

By: Gary Kriegerbusiness deal

How do you work with the professionals whose job it is to help you, counsel you, or guide you?  Do you have a trusted advisor who listens to you and really understands you?  After all, if you are not heard accurately, how can your advisor truly help you?  Stephen Covey, the highly acclaimed author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People says, “As you learn to listen deeply to other people, you will discover tremendous differences in perception.  You will also begin to appreciate the impact that these differences can have as people try to work together in interdependent situations”.

If you are interested in purchasing or selling real estate in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana or Woodland Hills, call me to discuss your needs.  I assure you I will listen attentively so that I will truly HEAR you.  I will continuously check my perceptions with you, and thereby confirm I understand what you mean.  What you say will become my mantra and as a result, your goals will be fulfilled.
