Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work”

Tipp’s Tip: Kate Bush

By: Steve Tipp

Share/Bookmark

My Tipp’s Tip this week is Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.”  If you are a fan, follower or foe of American Idol, this week big Mike pretty much destroyed with his version of this beautiful, heart rendering song.  People are most likely familiar with “This Woman’s Work” as it was covered by neo-soulster Maxwell who released it as a single in 2001 and had performed it on MTV’s unplugged in 1997.  When I was at Columbia records we released Kate Bush’s “The Sensual World” album (1989) and it went on to become her biggest selling US album.  Kate came to NY and did press and radio interviews and she was one of the most gracious artists I ever worked with; she signed a photo to me “My Dear Steve” and I tell you that was my experience with Kate Bush in a nutshell.  Lovely, sincere, warm, she walked it like she sang it all the way.

So on American Idol big Mike really rocked his version of “This Woman’s Work” but what was equally remarkable to me were the judge’s responses.  Randy Jackson was effusive as ever and said “Maxwell move over”.  (Hey Randy weren’t you a Columbia a&r guy when Kate’s version came out? And maybe, for Maxwell’s too!)  But Kara DioGuardi broke into tears and when I watched Kate’s version on You Tube just now I nearly broke into tears myself.  It’s just that good a song and it truly touches your heart.

Bob Marley “In Dub, Volume 1″

Tipp’s Tip: Bob Marley “In Dub, Volume 1″

By: Steve Tipp

When I was a teenager and we started hearing about Bob Marley and the Wailers around 1975-1976, we were hooked.  We were going to a hippy school and all the teachers were talking about them, they had played the Roxy and I think KMET broadcast the show, they were the talk of the town.  Marley is easily the best selling reggae artist of all time, his posthumous album “Exodus” has sold over 10 million copies in the US and 20 million internationally.  Time magazine in 1999 declared “Exodus” the Album of the Century.  While everything about his music is timeless; the melodies, vocals, lyrics, instrumentation, production, all of it is amazing. I can get a little worn out after 25-30 years.  So when I saw on my iTunes that Bob Marley “In Dub, Volume 1” was being released I was interested.  These versions are stripped down vocally and spaced out sonically and for folks who might be burnt out on the originals but still lovers of the music, they really freshen it up in a way that works for me.  Let me know what you think.

Ingenuity like Saint Exupery

Our imagination and our vision drives much of our creativity.  If we honor that part of ourselves, we have unlimited opportunities in all areas of our lives.  Antoine de Saint Exupery was a famous French writer, the author of The Little Prince, and Night Flight amongst many other books and articles.  Saint Exupery became a student at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris to study architecture in the early 1920’s.   He made this really incredible statement, so simple yet so profound: “A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.”   So, never cease to tap into your creative energy.  By focusing our attention on the important things in our lives, we can create the space we need to succeed in all sorts of arenas; family, friends, career, finances, play, architecture and so much more.   The paradox is that the more we do, the more time we seem to have to do the things we want to do.  And, our imagination can keep us young, vital and interested in all aspects of life!

So, if you have a dream, a vision or your imagination is telling you to act, call me and let’s discuss it.  Your rock pile can become whatever you envision it to be!  My clients generally have me working for them in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana & Woodland Hills.  But, they take me everywhere!

Tipp’s Tip: Vampire Weekend

This Weeks Tip is the American Indie Rock Band from NYC

By: Steve Tipp

Vampire Weekend is a band that formed at Columbia University (read: brainy), they’re poppy and rocky but have a strong afro-pop influence (King Sunny Ade or Paul Simon’s Graceland for the less initiated).  If you never heard their great song from their debut album (and I bet you have) check it out “A Punk”

The first single from their new album is called “Cousins” and it is great too!

The Realities of “No Child Left Behind”

By: Deborah Cahill

No Child Left Behind

No Child Left Behind

The New York Times (2/1, A1, Dillon) reports on its front page that the Obama administration “is proposing a sweeping overhaul” of NCLB “and will call for broad changes in how schools are judged to be succeeding or failing, as well as for the elimination of the law’s 2014 deadline for bringing every American child to academic proficiency.” However, the Times adds that the “administration is not planning to abandon the law’s commitments to closing the achievement gap between minority and white students and to encouraging teacher quality.” The Times notes that Secretary of Education Arne Duncan “foreshadowed the elimination of the 2014 deadline in a September speech, referring to it as a ‘utopian goal,’ and administration officials have since made clear that they want the deadline eliminated.”

Finally some common sense when it comes to this legislation.  NCLB (No Child Left Behind) is a wonderful in theory but it lacks the realistic ability to enforce it.  You cannot expect schools in “School Improvement” to miraculously catch up to schools in areas where the average household has at least one parent with a college degree just because the state is requiring higher test scores!  It just is not possible.

Realistic goals need to be set so that we are seeing steady improvement and at the same time are not setting goals which increase each year making it impossible for these schools to ever get out of School Improvement.  This encourages and allows the best students from the School Improvement schools to leave to go to other schools which are not in school improvement, hence making it more difficult for the SI school to improve test scores because their best students are no longer in attendance to help pull up their scores! It has been a “catch 22″ which has caused a great deal of distress and unfair pressure on the SI schools.  Maybe this new understanding on the part of the government will finally help public education and take some pressure off the schools who are drowning under this deadline.

Belly, Feed the Tree

This Weeks Tip: Belly

By: Steve Tipp

Here’s a blast from my past.  In the early ‘90’s I was working for Reprise Records doing Alternative Radio promotion.  I worked with a lot of great bands and lots of great music but I came across this Rolling Stone cover today and was moved in a number of ways.  Wow, this most lovely of bands that we had some really big success with was on the Cover of Rolling Stone?  I remember going away for the winter holidays and we had shipped the single “Feed The Tree” out to radio.  When we came back in the New Year this was on its way to becoming an alternative radio hit.  The album “Star” went Gold and was nominated for two Grammy’s.  That kind of sales success you could not duplicate today.  It was another time for sure.  A really good time though!

Teacher’s Say Law Hampers Creativity

By: Deborah Cahill

school-tests-404b_746348cShare/Bookmark

As a secondary school teacher in California for a number of years and as a classroom teacher for over 25 years I can at “test” to the fact that one of the major complaints teachers have is that we spend far too much time teaching to the test and then taking even more time out from our regular courses of study to complete the tests!  It has gotten to the point where we loose weeks each year on tests which teachers feel are unnecessary and really devalue our time.  As a result, the amount of material we love to teach and which excites the students, and which we have been able to cover, seems to diminish each year.  Here is a brief article that addresses that concern.

California’s Top Teachers Say Law Hampers Classroom Creativity, According To Study.

California’s Press Enterprise (1/26, Straehley) reported, “The best teachers don’t like the effects of the No Child Left Behind act, saying it hampers creativity in the classroom and makes it harder to teach students to love learning,” according to a UC Riverside study published in Policy Matters today. Researchers “surveyed 740 national board certified teachers in California” and “found that 84 percent reported overall unfavorable attitudes about the” law. Many teachers said that “too much class time is devoted to teaching what’s on the state tests, and there’s little time left for creative and fun lessons.” Titled, “Does the No Child Left Behind Act Help or Hinder K-12 Education,” the reports also says that “teachers did see value in the focus and high expectations set by the act, but” did not see NCLB as helping students reach those standards.
