Traffic on Buena Vista Street and Empire Avenue

Buena Vista construction to worsen commute

By: Shelley Rizzottibuena vista street burbank

Considered some of the worst roads in Burbank, Buena Vista Street and Empire Avenue are undergoing resurfacing construction which will tie these roads up until early August, reports suggest. Both roads were rated “very poor” during a citywide survey of roads in 2005. Stretching from Jeffries Avenue to the alley south of San Fernando Blv, this is the final phase of the $824,000 project. The funds are coming from 2 places — $600,000 from city redevelopment funds and the second from state gasoline-tax revenue.

Most of Buena Vista construction will be complete by July 24th where Empire Avenue will remain open. The final touches on Empire Avenue will take place through next week during the late night, early hours.

A Life Dedicated to Spreading Happiness

Mary Alice O’Conormary oconnor

A true Fairy Godmother passes away at the age of 93 peacefully at her home. She has been a pillar in the Burbank community stemming from volunteer work that dates back to World War II. Most people associate Mary as the inspiration for Disney’s animated “Cinderella” Fairy Godmother, and wife of Ken O’Connor, Disney’s renowned artist…but she should also be remembered as a devoted volunteer. Her accomplishments were well spread throughout her life.

Among her contributions was the involvement as a school board member, her role in leadership for Burbank’s Tournament of Roses as well as being part of the Friends of Burbank Library and Historical Society. One of her dearest accomplishments was being a key player in the reopening of the Burbank Starlight Bowl in the early 1990’s. The Mary O’Conor Family Center carries on her life lessons in that they offer educational enrichment programs in addition to child care services. Her life was spent volunteering to help others which lives on through individuals who follow in her footsteps.

As a wine, food and concert lover, I wanted to make a point to share this wine festival with my readers. The City of Los Angeles with the help of the Rotary Club will feature over 30  California wines and culinary expressions from Patina Restaurant Group’s, Nick & Stef’s Steakhouse, Kendall’s Brasserie, Cafй Pinot, Zucca Ristorante and ‘tina Tacos.

Be prepared for entertainment and a silent auction as this charity event raises money for the renovation of the newly-named Volunteers of America Rotary House. The Volunteers of America’s homeless program downtown is a place of shelter and hope for those on skid road. It’s a great chance to help the impoverished in our own country.

The venue is the Music Center of Los Angeles (view the google map here). You can purchase tickets here for $5.

Outdoor Cats Ready For Duty feral cats

By: Shelley Rizzotti

Share/Bookmark

We’ve all seen the signs ‘Will work for food.’ Feral Cats at the Burbank Animal Shelter literally will.

Cats that have not been socialized around humans can not be adopted out as house pets, therefore, when trapped and brought to the shelter, they have only one option-Relocation.

The Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter (VBAS) fund a program wherein we will transport our undomesticated cats to places where they will be cared for.  Suitable homes include barns, stables, industrial sites and residential yards.

Outdoor cats require minimal care. They must be fed once a day and have some form of protective housing in which to escape from inclement weather and predators such as coyotes.

The VBAS provides support and advice as to how to keep the cats safe and healthy.

In return the cats provide an invaluable service to their adopters by keeping rodents at bay. Having cats on your property is a natural deterrent to rats and mice.

Keeping cats around your home is a much safer solution to pest control than poisons, and is a much more humane choice than traps. With a low adoption fee of $58, cats are also a much less expensive option.

For more information on how to work together with the VBAS to help feral cats please contact: Anne Macleod 818-469-3937 cal-mac@pacbell.net or visit our website www.basv.org

Where is Toluca Woods?

By: Lisa Stanleytoluca_woods

For those of you who hear the words “North Hollywood” and cringe, wanting instead to live in the nearby tony Toluca Lake but cannot meet the expense of buying a home there, here is an option for you. A nice portion of North Hollywood has been renamed to “Toluca Woods.” Toluca Woods is an area north of Toluca Lake — Camarillo to Magnolia north and south, from Cahuenga Boulevard at the west and then Hollywood Way to the east (check for precise boundaries.) This area is less than a mile from the quaint shops in Toluca Lake, as well as being a stone’s throw from the studios, Burbank, great restaurants and tons of shopping. Since you are not in Toluca Lake proper, home prices are way more reasonable and in most cases, just that much farther from the freeway. So get into the neighborhood of your dreams – Well adjacent to the neighborhood, and give Toluca Woods a try.

Gulock’s Course of The Week: Lost Canyons Golf Club

This week’s course of the week is Lost Canyons Golf Club…

By: Kyle Gulocklost

… located at 3301 Lost Canyons Drive, Simi Valley, CA 93063. Lost Canyons Golf Club is the only 36 hole public facility in Ventura County.  Lost Canyons Golf Club was designed by renowned golf course architect Pete Dye with consulting help from Masters Champion Fred Couples. There are 2 courses at this spectacular facility, The Sky Course and The Shadow Course. The Sky Course is a par 72, plays 7,285 yards from the back tees and was recognized as a Top 10 New Course by Golf Magazine in 2001. The Shadow Course is also a par 72, plays 7,005 yards from the back tees, and was recognized as a Top 10 New Course by Golf Magazine in 2002.

Lost Canyons is truly a unique golf experience. The views while playing a round at this course are simply breathtaking. A month back I had the opportunity to play The Sky Course with a few friends of mine that work for Intel Corporation. It was a picture perfect day out, fresh cut grass, birds chirping but this course was extremely difficult from the back tees. Almost every hole seemed to play substantially up hill, or down hill. It was almost impossible to find a perfectly flat lie even in the center of the fairway, which I passed while driving the cart to my ball in the rough. The scores were high that day, but it was a great place to get out and spend part of a day with old friends. If you are looking for a challenging course that will get you out of the city life, check out Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley. The annual Northern Trust Open is taking place in our backyard this weekend. The host site will be Riviera Country Club, which is located in Pacific Palisades, CA. Riviera Country Club has been the host site for the Los Angeles PGA Tour stop since 1927. The course will be set up as a par 71 and will play 7,325 yards from the back tees. The purse for this year’s event is $6,400,000.

Once again, the field in this tournament is strong and comprised of 4 players that are ranked in the top 10 according to the world golf rankings. The favorite is Phil Michelson who won the last 2 Northern Trust Opens at Riviera Country Club. Last week Phil drew criticism from Scott McCarron for using wedges that don’t conform to the new standards set by the PGA tour. After an hour long meeting with tour officials on Tuesday night at Riviera Country Club, McCarron has since apologized to Phil for making those comments.

The tournament starts tomorrow, Thursday February 4th and the final round will take place Sunday February 7th.  The weekend outlook includes a little bit of rain over the next few days, but the rain should be gone by Sunday’s final round. Tickets are $35 in advance of $50 at the gate. You can purchase tickets by clicking on the link below…Northern Trust Open
