Salvation Army: How to Help Haiti
Two months to the day since the catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti (3/12/2010) – Salvation Army volunteers from all parts of the Southland will gather in Bell, CA to participate in a two-day, 24-hour humanitarian mission for the earthquake-ravaged island nation of Haiti.
Through a partnership with Numana, Inc. – a nonprofit dedicated to relieving global hunger – this army of volunteers will roll up their sleeves and form a massive assembly line as they pack 1 million meals. In the first event of its kind in the West, these 1 million nutritious food packages will be assembled in 24 hours for shipment to Haiti. Donations of food and water have proved a lifeline to the 1.2 million displaced by the quake and The Salvation Army will continue to assist throughout this ongoing crisis.
Recruit a team of 12 people and register to serve. Be sure to indicate that you’re interested in the ‘Million Meals for Haiti’ project on the volunteer sign-up form, and let us know the names of the folks you’ve recruited to your team. We also need to know which shift you’d like to sign up for. If you want to speak to someone about signing up, please call 213-607-7314. And, if you are unable to recruit a team of 12, don’t panic … we’ll fit you in with another team or give you a job anyway! WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Every Man Must Thank his Faults
Words from Emerson…
By: Gary Krieger
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “As every man had ever a point of pride that was not injurious to him, so no man had ever a defect that was not somewhere made useful to him…Every man in his lifetime needs to thank his faults.” Likewise, the faults of the market offer opportunities to those who pay attention. And, we must thank those faults and pay attention to what they offer us.
Today on the radio I heard an economist say by 2012 we’ll be back to normal. Recovery will have taken hold and the stock market will thrive. Now, we all know that economists are notorious for digging themselves into holes and then explaining how they get out of the holes, but more and more economists are predicting recovery in the not-so-distant future. That leaves opportunity for savvy people to buy real estate now, before the market heats up again. And, those who do will likely reap the profits from those purchases. 2012? 2013? 2014? We really don’t know. But we do know that historically, in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana and Woodland Hills, for example, the markets have always rebounded and have always gone higher than the previous highs. I hope this is helpful…

Selling Real Estate like Brenda Ueland
By: Gary Krieger

Gretchen Ueland
Selling or buying residential real estate is a collaborative project. While the realtor is the professional and should provide valuable guidance to his clients, the clients provide the most important input into the process. There’s a wonderful quote from Brenda Ueland, the writer, journalist and teacher who lived from 1891 to 1985. She said, “Listening is a majestic and strange thing, a creative force. When people really listen to each other in a quiet, fascinated attention, the creative fountain inside each of us begins to spring and cast up new thoughts and unexpected wisdom”.
As I listen to my clients, I focus on the issues at hand in order to hear them at a deeper level. I always hope they do the same when I speak to them. This synergy offers an opportunity to work as a team, collaborating to find the best solutions that work for my clients. One of my clients had a constraint on purchasing a new home in a specific area. By discussing similar areas in other parts of the hillside, by asking questions and by putting our heads together, we opened up several new, and previously not considered areas for them to look for a home. We succeeded and they now have a home outside the original, and rigid, geographic boundaries.
My clients tend to be in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana and Woodland Hills. While I go wherever they take me in Los Angeles, this is my primary area of focus. If you’re looking for a professional to help you sell your home, and want someone who will partner with you, call me. And, if your looking to purchase a home, I’d be honored to help you.

Listen Deeply and Work Smoothly
By: Gary Krieger
How do you work with the professionals whose job it is to help you, counsel you, or guide you? Do you have a trusted advisor who listens to you and really understands you? After all, if you are not heard accurately, how can your advisor truly help you? Stephen Covey, the highly acclaimed author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People says, “As you learn to listen deeply to other people, you will discover tremendous differences in perception. You will also begin to appreciate the impact that these differences can have as people try to work together in interdependent situations”.
If you are interested in purchasing or selling real estate in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana or Woodland Hills, call me to discuss your needs. I assure you I will listen attentively so that I will truly HEAR you. I will continuously check my perceptions with you, and thereby confirm I understand what you mean. What you say will become my mantra and as a result, your goals will be fulfilled.

Ingenuity like Saint Exupery
By: Gary Krieger

Saint Exupery
Our imagination and our vision drives much of our creativity. If we honor that part of ourselves, we have unlimited opportunities in all areas of our lives. Antoine de Saint Exupery was a famous French writer, the author of The Little Prince, and Night Flight amongst many other books and articles. Saint Exupery became a student at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris to study architecture in the early 1920’s. He made this really incredible statement, so simple yet so profound: “A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.” So, never cease to tap into your creative energy. By focusing our attention on the important things in our lives, we can create the space we need to succeed in all sorts of arenas; family, friends, career, finances, play, architecture and so much more. The paradox is that the more we do, the more time we seem to have to do the things we want to do. And, our imagination can keep us young, vital and interested in all aspects of life!
So, if you have a dream, a vision or your imagination is telling you to act, call me and let’s discuss it. Your rock pile can become whatever you envision it to be! My clients generally have me working for them in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana & Woodland Hills. But, they take me everywhere!

Family Sues LAUSD in Marijuana Suit
By: Michelle Tepper
Due to an alleged drug problem in Los Angeles Unified School District, administrators at Granada Hills middle school attempted to take action. How? Well, they set up a 12 year old as bait in marijuana sting operation. Sound a little twisted? Well, some think so; namely, the family who is know suing the district. The Los Angeles Superior Court allegedly claimed that the boy was caused “great mental, physical, and nervous pain and suffering.”
Families are understandably concerned to hear the amount of alleged drug activity in the district. Please keep your children aware of the dangers posed when dealing with drugs and let’s keep our kids focused on education. For more information visit: Drug Free World

Braemar Country Club
Braemar Country Club
By: Kyle Gulock
This week’s course is Braemar Country Club. Situated in the heart of Tarzana, Braemar Country Club is located at 4001 Reseda Blvd, Tarzana, CA 91357. Braemar Country Club offers two courses for their members. The East Course, which graces the front of the clubhouse, plays 6,061 yards from the back tees and is a par 70. The par 71 Guldahl or West course plays a bit shorter at 5,839. Both courses offer unique challenges to golfers of all skill levels. The designer of both courses is famous Southern California architect Ted Robinson Sr, who passed away in May 2008.
An interesting fact about Braemar Country Club is that three time major winner Ralph Guldahl was a teaching professional here from 1959-1987 when he passed away. During his illustrious career, Guldahl won the U.S. open in 1937 & 1938 as well as the Masters 1939.

Borderline Bar and Grill
Doors plan to re-open again in December…
By: Kenny Melcombe

Borderline Bar and Grill
For years Borderline Bar & Grill has had roof leaks. The owner of Borderline for the last two years has been negotiating with the building landlord to replace the roof. Seasons change, rain falls and the Health Department pays their yearly visit. This year the leaks in the roof were so out of control that Borderlines permit to operate was suspended until the repairs are made.
As of two weeks ago an agreement was struck between landlord and tenant and new roof will be replaced in the next couple of weeks, weather permitting. And there is more. Besides the new roof there will also be some other upgrades to the club. Carpet will be the most noticed change though outside of that there will be a few other remodeling modernizations to the interior.
If you haven’t been to Borderline, it is the place to be in the Conejo Valley. Beside’s the typical Bar and Grill Restaurant, Borderline hosts a meeting place for pool leagues, concerts and dancing. Almost every night of the week, Borderline has a new look.
Borderline also offers West Coast Swing night on Mondays (just like dancing with the stars); Tuesday night is Salsa night, Wednesday night is college night, and Sunday night is well known for family night. If you have ever wanted to learn to dance this is Conejo Valley’s dancing depot. They have great instructors teaching classes almost nightly. Classes usually run from 6:30pm till 8pm followed by open dancing till closing.
Though while the Borderline is closed, some of the dance coaches have continued their normal dancing classes at temporary locations. Cliff Housego, the schedule coordinator and instructor for Borderline, has booked a ballroom at the Westlake Hyatt for his West Coast Swing and Night Club two step classes on Monday nights.
So next month, come & visit The Borderline Bar & Grill—with a fresh new look when they re-open in December.
